QUESTION:
I have a friend who says he is a Christian, but is very
liberal and doesn't seem to really "get it." How can I help him understand true
Christianity?
The first thing you need to do is to pray for him. Then
you can have a loving talk with him, and you should be sure that you emphasize
that Christianity is a relationship, not a religion. Christianity is not just a
set of rules or laws we must follow; it is a personal relationship with the
living Lord of the universe. This is the most important truth you will want to
leave him with, as this is a key ingredient of Christianity. Point out how a
personal relationship with Jesus provides all the strength needed to deal with
life's harsh realities. Inform him that if he really wants to experience the
love of God, the place to begin is a close and personal relationship with Jesus
Christ. One of the best ways to make this a strong point is to tell him about
your relationship with Jesus. Good luck, but do remember it is God who will
ready his heart to receive the truth, and it will be in His perfect timing.
Relevant SCRIPTURE:
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you
would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen
him." John 14:6,7
