This has been around for a little while, but it is one of those things that should be read by everyone from time to time. This was most recently sent to my by a Zapper friend named James. Thanks Zapper James.
It is often attributed to a school aged child of 12 to 14 years of age and often to a different child. It is commonly credited to 12 year old in Arizona. I checked with Snopes and they indicate "undetermined" as to the source. In my opinion it does not matter who wrote it, the content is still valid.
Since the Pledge of Allegiance & The Lord's Prayer are not allowed in many public schools anymore—
Please think about this as you read it.
A NEW School prayer
Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offense - it's a freedom scene.
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all.
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.
We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong.
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take !!!
Amen.

I hadn't seen this particular prayer before, but it doesn't matter. Here's one I wrote in rebuttal. I hope you'll give it some thought:

Here I sit and wring my hands
A stranger lost in foreign lands
Brainwashed and so full of fear
As if Almighty God weren't here
I cringe at every law they pass
So powerless I am! Alas!
Part of me would like to pray
But think of what my friends would say!
I grind my teeth at each offense
All these sinners make me tense
I block the voice from God above
Who says, "Reach out to them in love."
The Ten Commandments I lament
Cannot be scribed in some cement
But while I picket City Hall
I do forget to keep them all
I'm too caught up in church and state
The world has taught me how to hate
It isn't fair I must be brave

The world is in the dead of night
Christ died so I'd be the light
So why do I live in such dread
When I could bring His life instead?
I struggle less as time goes on

The above statement is false.
Fact: Students are allowed to pray and participate in a multitude of religious activities in public schools and it is illegal for the school to attempt to stop them (provided the prayers/religious activities are not a distraction to those students that do not wish to participate.)
Fact: Schools may not prohibit students from wearing religiously themed clothing or symbols, from carrying religious texts such as the Bible, or from organizing prayer groups.
Fact: What the courts have banned is "Mandatory" prayer in public schools...where students are required to participate.
Fact: Matthew 6:5-6 Specifically states that prayer should be done in private.
When considering these facts, the poem you cited loses all context and renders your post to be devoid of meaning.

I like that. Did you just write it or is it something you wrote in the past? I have considered yours and don't really consider it a rebuttal... Maybe just a slightly different point of view. In any event thanks for taking the time to leave it here.
